Supporting Construction Safety Week 2016

By Edel Lambe, Fundraising Manager, NRH Foundation, National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH), Dún Laoghaire, Co. Dublin

Did you ever take a minute out to think about turning points in your life – how a single point in time directed your life’s journey down a certain path you never imagined travelling. None of us know what the future holds and the individual roller coasters we will each travel.

Construction safety week 2016 is about taking that time to just think and evaluate – think about safety on site, doing a refresher with staff and colleagues. This time taken might actually save lives or at the very least will prevent possible future accidents in the workplace.

The National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH), Dún Laoghaire, is delighted to be teaming up with the CIF and HSA this year in the creation of a social media campaign focused on survivors of workplace accidents.

Due to the nature of the work that is carried out in our very specialised rehabilitation hospital, we have, over the years, had many people through our doors as a result of an accident on a construction site. We have seen people’s lives irreversibly changed as a result of an accident at work – a split second that resulted in a life change not just for them but for their family also. As a result of this traumatic event and through their rehabilitation journey, people often have to identify the new path that they will now follow in life’s journey. We feel very privileged to travel this very unique journey with them.

It is our hope however, that through the awareness and focus that Construction Safety week will bring, fewer people will pass through our halls in the future as a result of a construction industry accident. For us, each individual we travel this journey with is one too many if their accident could have been prevented.

The NRH is the National Centre for the provision of Specialist Rehabilitation Services in Spinal Cord Injury, Brain Injury in addition to Prosthetic & limb absence. Each of these 3 Programmes would have experience of working with patients in their rehabilitation journey as a result of a workplace accident.

Our staff have seen first-hand how lives can be changed in a split second.

As a result we fully endorse and support the vision of Construction Safety week, to reduce workplace accidents and maximise the safety and well-being of all workers.
