Cahalane Bros Ltd are putting Clonakilty Black Pudding back on the West Cork map.

In February 2016, Cahalane Bros Ltd was appointed to deliver a new €7 million production facility for Clonakilty Black Pudding.

This exciting project heralds the return of the famous brand’s production to Clonakilty and will see the company increase operations and expand their range.

“This is our first time to deliver a project for a food industry client and it has been a great experience,” Donal Cahalane, Project Engineer with Cahalane Bros said. “Our background is in commercial and residential, so this project presented a challenge in that sense, but we employed the same approach as we do to all of our work; we worked very closely with the client to collaborate and get the project over the line.”

The project is located on a prominent site on the western end of Clonakilty and includes office space to cater for administration and production staff, as well as a visitor centre allowing the client’s products and production to be showcased.

Site clearance commenced at the end of February 2016 and has progressed with fit-out works to the production hall and administration building advancing well.

Cahalane Bros Ltd has worked with the architects Duncoba Ltd, engineers, Finbarr Gannon and Company Ltd, M&E consultants Jerry Geaney and PQS, Deasy Walley Partnership to evolve the design as the project has progressed, to offer best value to the client.

Works include the installation of hygienic wall and ceiling systems, refrigeration equipment and high grade resin floors.

The project signifies a substantial private business investment in West Cork and its dynamic Food Industry and Cahalane Bros made an effort to employ local workers, where possible.

“The steel frame contractor is from West Cork and we did most of the groundwork ourselves,” Donal said. “It has been a fantastic project for us to be a part of and it is fantastic for the town and for West Cork in general to have this facility here.”

Cahalane Bros Ltd is a third generation construction business, which was founded by Jerh and Dan Cahalane in the 1930s. Conor Cahalane, Jerh’s son, continues to manage the family business and in recent years Donal, Conor’s son, joined the company bringing valuable experience gained on project abroad.
