As part of the #BuildingEquality 2018 Campaign, Bernadette Farrell, O’Connell Mahon Architects, shares her story as a woman in construction.
After raising 5 children I returned to college to complete my course in Architectural Technology in Bolton Street.
I was separated from my husband so money was tight and I decided to reduce my costs by buying a second hand moped to reduce travel time and cost.
I was lucky that when I qualified it was the start of the Boom in the construction industry and started my career and haven’t looked back.
I would welcome more women in our industry as their work ethic enhances any project and they have a great ‘can do’ attitude. I am lucky enough to be working on the New Paediatric Hospital on the James’ site with some of the most intelligent and wonderful women from the Architects, Structural and Mechanical Engineers to the Clients to the Contractors.
