#BuildingEquality – Sharing Your Stories: Aoife Gormally

As part of the #BuildingEquality 2018 Campaign, Aoife Gormally, Site Foreman, John Sisk & Son (Holdings) Ltd, shares her story as a woman in construction.

Growing up I always had an interest in wood work and buildings/construction. I did wood work in school up until Junior Certificate cycle. While doing my Leaving Certificate I thought I wanted to do nursing but was overwhelmed when I realised this was not the career that I wanted.

I thought long and hard about what I wanted to do and wood work was my passion. I applied for an apprenticeship with Sisk in 2009, completed an interview and was accepted.

I started my journey with Sisk in November 2009. After a four year apprenticeship there was a downturn in the economy where I was offered an opportunity to advance my career as a trainee Foreman which I greatly accepted.

I started in London November 2013 on a residential building learning about day to day managing of jobs. I moved back to Dublin in 2016 as a section foreman on Capital Dock.
