Growth of King & Moffatt

Established by Pat King, Managing Director, and John Moffatt, Director, in 1978, King & Moffatt is a privately held company. It provides mechanical and electrical engineering services to the construction industry, from design through to installation and maintenance, delivered by a directly- employed workforce. The company has more than doubled in the last three years and now has offices in Carrick on Shannon, Birmingham, London, Stoke and Edinburgh, and operates in 6 different countries.

King & Moffatt’s services offering has expanded far beyond its electrical contracting beginnings according to King: “King & Moffatt began with two electricians, now we provide much more than that; mechanical services, maintenance, energy monitoring, automation and controls, BMS, design services and BIM 3D modelling. As a partner to our clients we take all these services and co-ordinate and manage the success of their projects.”

King & Moffatt have invested heavily in technology over recent years. They have recognised some key players in the technology space that they feel will help them deliver a higher quality service driving value through efficiency for clients. Some of these technology providers include Autodesk (3d and 2d Design), Microsoft (SharePoint, Dynamics and Azure), Amtech (Estimation, Electrical System Design and Point Cloud), and Bentley (Mechanical System Design).

The way individuals and organizations use and interact with their buildings and its connected assets continues to evolve. Technology is going to play a huge role within the construction industry and King & Moffatt are passionate about understanding these technologies and utilising them to provide a turn key package for clients.

A new company was started this year called King & Moffatt Connected to seize the opportunity that Industry 4.0 presents. King & Moffatt Connected Ltd. provides a full design, monitoring, control and facilities management service for all mechanical and electrical building systems.

The new office and infrastructure, including interactive smart screens with built in conference calling, will support the company in delivering BIM 3D modelling and design services internationally from its base in Carrick on Shannon, and also connecting with regional offices. By utilising the cloud and new technologies such as VR (Virtual Reality) & AR (Augmented Reality), the company believes it will gain a competitive advantage in the building services market.

In 2014 King and Moffatt saw the significant drive towards automation in the built environment especially in manufacturing facilities. They sent a number of electricians who had served their apprenticeships with the company onto both full and part-time third level courses in Electrical Control and Automation. With 2018 being the first year of this graduating class, they are already seeing the rewards of having the ability to deliver this service in-house, having recently completed two significant projects where they have handed over a full design, install and commissioning package of a process line direct to the client.

King & Moffatt have been awarded ISO 9001 international Quality Management system, ISO 14001 Environment Management and ISO 45001 Occupational Health & Safety Management system series. The new headquarters has been certified to international quality, environmental and safety management standards, recognising the importance of defined fit-for-purpose management systems in giving confidence to both existing and new clients domestically and internationally.
