Safety, Health and Wellbeing Calendar 2025
Quarter 1 (Jan-Mar) – Site Safety & Leadership
Health, safety and wellbeing
The CIF has updated its Safety, Health and Wellbeing Calendar to address the key focus areas for construction in 2025. The intent is to promote a high level of focus on essential site safety considerations, as perceived by the CIF Safety and Health Subcommittee. The calendar endeavours to provide an itinerary of key diary events for each calendar month to reflect national and international campaigns for safety, health and wellbeing. It must be acknowledged that the calendar is not rigid and may be amended to reflect developing issues or indeed targeted safety or health campaigns.
January 2025
Refocus on Site Safety
January represents an opportunity to reflect on the year that has ended, and to set new goals for the year ahead and lead by example. Due to the extreme inclement weather forecasted a strong focus on emergency preparedness and response in the workplaces is crucial. We must re-focus our efforts in addressing site safety hazards such as slips, trips and falls, working at height, proximity to mobile plant and machinery, live services, occupational dust, non-compliant PPE/RPE etc. We should review past activities and aim to learn from successes, failures, incidents and near misses. Review your Risk Assessments to ensure that the correct control measures are implemented.
February 2025
Excavations and Temporary Works
This month, the focus is on hazards associated with excavations and temporary works, including the dangers of working near underground or overhead services. Trenching and excavation are dangerous tasks because they pose the risk of cave-ins. Workers involved in trenching and excavation also risk falls from height, falling loads, hazardous atmospheres and working close to plant. For these reasons, extra precautions must be taken to only work in protected trenches. We are advising all members to examine thoroughly all excavations, chafts, earthworks and underground works due to the recent adverse weather. Please focus on these areas to ensure works are in accordance with the safety, health and welfare at work (construction) regulations 2013 regulation (52) and regulation (60) approved form [AF 3].
March 2025
