Learning & Development

The Construction Industry Federation (CIF) Learning & Development Department is the leading provider of training programmes for the construction industry in Ireland. All training courses have been devised to meet specific and evolving needs of the Irish construction sector, and are informed by those working on the front line of the construction industry.

The Department provides a wide range of top quality programmes, with expert lecturers sourced from relevant fields within the construction industry. As a result, its construction training programmes are highly regarded, both in Ireland and internationally. CIF training courses are practical, allowing them to be easily transferred to real world scenarios on site.

Essential Training Programmes

Core Safety and Building Regulations programmes are established as the highest standard in the industry and have been delivered to construction clients – both public and private – as well as main contractors and sub-contractors.

These programmes are designed to impact on those attending and highlight what key changes need to be made within their working day to improve safety and building regulations compliance on site.

eLearning & Live Classrooms

In January 2017, eLearning became the latest learning platform by which the Learning and Development Department is delivering course modules.
With more to follow, initial eLearning construction  programmes include:

  • Core Safety Management Renewal Programme
  • Contracts & Legislation 2016/17
  • Building Control & Amendment Regulations (BCAR)
  • Building Regulations modules
  • CIF Standardised Site Induction
  • IR/HR modules are also planned for the second half of 2017

In 2017, the Learning and Development Department launched its “Live Classroom” Project, which is initially offering the CIF IOSH Managing Safety in Construction Training. Live Classrooms use Internet technology to provide live, interactive lessons between an instructor and students, allowing active discussions, with simultaneous document viewing.

Course Accreditation

CIF training programmes are the named programmes within the Department of Finance Pre Qualification documents for construction tenders. All CIF courses provide accreditation, a key factor for construction companies, which has become essential throughout Irish industry and abroad. CIF construction training courses are accredited to bodies such as Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) and Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).

Working to CIF member budgets

The Learning & Development Department provides support to CIF members in getting the best overall deal for their budget in all areas of training.
CIF courses are industry-specific and address skills and competencies not covered by either apprentice training or by third level certificate, diploma or degree courses.

Programmes are delivered by national and international training and development specialists, ensuring recognition amongst employers, client bodies and legislation/regulatory agencies.

Dermot Carey

Dermot Carey – Director, Safety and Training

Dermot Carey heads up Safety & Training Department within the CIF. Dermot has responsibility for developing and guiding the CIF’s policy in these areas. Along with shaping policy, the role involves liaising with Government departments, Education sector and members on issues and providing assistance with member safety regulatory compliance. Included in this role is the operation of the Safe-T-Cert accreditation service and its day-to-day operations in the Republic of Ireland.

Robert Butler

Robert Butler – Head of Learning & Development

Robert Butler heads up the CIF Learning & Development Department and has responsibility for developing and delivering the CIF’s CPD programmes as well as the externally accredited training programmes. Robert has responsibility for developing new content including elearning modules with our business partners.

Louise Kerins – Administrator, Learning & Development.

Louise is responsible for the day to day Learning & Development calendar & tutor management of the Department. Louise is also the key point of contact with IOSH for our accredited programmes. Louise provides administration for the following programmes; CIF Appointed Person (Cranes Operations), CIF IOSH Managing Safely in Construction, CIF Core Safety Management Renewal Programme (Dublin programmes), CIF Site Supervisor Safety Programme and our new Business Skill programmes which are being launched in 2018 along with joint responsibility for the  CIF QQI Building Regulations Programme.

Kim Hutchinson – Administrator, Learning & Development

Kim's key responsibility is in dealing with regional venue & tutor booking and management. Kim is responsible for dealing with credit control with the Head of Department. Kim is the key point of contact for QQI for our accredited programmes. Kim provides administration for the following programmes; CIF Managing the Role of the PSCS, CIF Managing the Role of the PSDP, CIF Core Safety Management renewal Programme (Regional programmes), CIF Scaffold Management & Inspection programme, CIF Conservation Theory Heritage Contractors Programme, CIF Air Tightness programme, CIF QQI Building Regulations Programme jointly with Louise & the CIF Virtual elearning programmes.

Conor Greham – Business Development, Learning & Development

Conor is responsible for new business development for the CIF Learning & Development Department. He liaises with members and non-members in relation to courses taking place throughout the different regions. He advises on courses that are most applicable to companies and learners requirements
