As Ireland’s construction sector prepares for renewed growth in 2025, safety remains a critical priority for businesses navigating complex, high-risk environments.
Verizon Connect’s Construction eBrief 2025 IRL sheds light on how GPS tracking technology is emerging not only as a tool for operational efficiency but as a vital component in safeguarding workers, equipment, and project outcomes.
According to the report, construction accounts for over 22% of all fatal workplace accidents in the EU. This is a stark reminder of the sector’s inherent risks. In response, companies are increasingly adopting GPS asset tracking solutions to mitigate hazards and improve site safety. These technologies offer real-time visibility into fleet and equipment movements, enabling managers to respond swiftly to emergencies, enforce geofenced safety zones, and monitor driver behaviour.
Key safety-related benefits highlighted in the report include:
- 50% reduction in accidents
- 48% improvement in overall safety
- 46% enhancement in driver safety habits
- 42% decrease in unauthorised vehicle use
- 35% reduction in speeding and harsh driving incidents
GPS tracking also supports proactive safety management by allowing construction firms to:
- Establish virtual perimeters (geofences) to control equipment movement and prevent collisions.
- Receive alerts when assets are used outside authorised hours or locations.
- Monitor engine hours and maintenance schedules to prevent mechanical failures.
- Track driver behaviour to promote responsible operation and reduce liability.
With 77% of construction businesses reporting GPS tracking as “very” or “extremely beneficial”, and 73% achieving a positive ROI within one year, the case for investment is compelling. Beyond safety, the technology contributes to measurable benefits such as fuel efficiency, theft prevention, and improved asset utilisation.
As the industry continues to grow, Irish construction firms that prioritise safety through smart fleet technologies will be better positioned to lead with confidence, resilience, and responsibility.
