The Construction Safety Campaign 2024 took place over two weeks from
October 14–25th 2024 – this encompassed European Safety Week.
We asked the construction industry to run safety and health events for five days between 14th and 25th October.
Following on from 2023’s successful campaign, the CIF Safety Committee decided to retain the theme for 2024 as Focus on Critical Risk. We encouraged construction contractors to get involved by identifying the key risks that staff are exposed to and developing initiatives to build awareness of these risks and how to mitigate them.
Watch Ronan Redmond, CIF Executive for Safety, Education & Training, introduce the campaign.
Hands for Life
Irish Heart Foundation
The Construction Industry Federation was delighted to support and raise awareness for the Irish Heart Foundation as part of our Construction Safety Campaign. We are encouraged our members and partners to help raise awareness of heart health and provide CPR training to their employees.
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a simple skill that can help save a life. CPR involves recognising that someone is having a cardiac arrest, contacting the emergency services and pushing hard and fast on the chest. Every year in Ireland thousands die from cardiac arrests. CPR is a vital step in the chain of survival after a cardiac arrest. If you have been taught CPR, you are 10 times more likely to respond appropriately in an emergency.

So, what is a critical risk?
Critical Risks are activities we undertake frequently that, if not controlled, could lead to significant injury or fatality.
As part of our safety campaign, we asked construction companies and workers of all sectors to examine fundamental safety questions such as:
- Do you know your critical risks?
- Have you controls in place to manage these risks?
- Are your colleagues aware of these risks?
- Are the controls in place to protect safety adequate?
Heart health as a critical risk.
October 14th is the start of Restart a Heart week, so, with a focus on health, we partnered with the Irish Heart Foundation to promote heart health and encouraged contractors to train staff in CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation), as part of the Irish Heart Foundation’s Hands for Life initiative.
Last year, almost 1,000 men died from a heart attack in Ireland and over 4,000 women die from cardiovascular disease. One in four men and women will lose their lives to heart disease or stroke.
Having the ability to administer CPR can double the chance of survival.
We asked members to support the Irish Heart Foundation and complete a rollout of CPR training onsite, workplace wellness programmes and/or health promotion initiatives focusing on a healthy heart.
